The latest paper from Swoboda is now available. It is written by our 2021 Credit Union Research Prizewinners, Professor Martin Quinn (Queens University Belfast), Dr Peter Cleary (University College Cork) and Dr Martijn van der Steen (University of Groningen).
The report considers social value reporting as a means for credit unions in Ireland to demonstrate their wider purpose to regulators and other stakeholders, so that policy and regulation might better recognise credit unions’ distinctiveness from other financial providers. Martin, Peter and Martijn emphasise the risk that solely reporting on financial measures fails to support the moral legitimacy of credit unions. In the course of the research, the authors spoke to 25 people from across the movement, including 12 CEOs/managers. The research is focused on Ireland but will resonate with British credit unions too.
