It’s a busy month for CFCFE’s Advisory Panel member Dr Olive McCarthy! In addition to the work on social impact that we have partnered on recently (see this post), Olive has been interviewed by Chris Smith about her work on interest rate caps, high cost credit and credit unions as an alternative, and the conversation is released as a podcast – listen here. Does interest rate capping squeeze bad lenders out of the market to consumers’ benefit, or does this leave people nowhere to turn? What is the opportunity for credit unions? these and other questions are addressed in the discussion. Olive, who is Director of the Centre for Co-operative Studies at Cork University Business School, takes a predominantly Irish perspective but also considers the some of the issues in the UK, where interest rates are regulated differently.
